First Skirt of Christmas: Glasgow Pencil Skirt

Welcome to the 12 Skirts of Christmas series!! I am so excited about these next few weeks… although it is a bit crazy Christmas is only 12 days away. Add to that the fact that doing a “series” always makes the time go faster and I am kinda bummed it is already here. I try to stretch out Christmas as long as possible:)I wanted to be the first to share a Christmas skirt. I love when stars align and something you thought would be difficult ends up being totally easy! It doesn’t happen often but when it does wow do I relish in it! Thats how it was with this skirt. I knew I wanted to knock off Anthropologies Glasbury Skirt.

I adore a good plaid wool skirt and this one really jumped out to me. I headed to the fabric store to see if I could find some fun wool and to my surprise all suiting and wool was 40% off. Woo hoo! I also decided that it would be easier to start off with a pattern then designing the entire skirt from scratch. I was lucky enough to go on a day when all patterns were $1.99! My skirt is alteration of Simplicty pattern 2315 A.

The finished product looked like this:

It was such a simple skirt in the end. I purchased some fun bias tape in a color I thought would pop against the skirt. Then I followed the skirt pattern until I got to the point where the front and back were sewn together. The I simply top stitched the two lines of bias tape down to where I thought was a good length. You can leave the ends unfinished. I had read in the reviews that the main complaint about this skirt was that the pockets “gaped”. I decided to make mine a bit smaller. I cut a square out of paper and rounded the corners. I then cut four  fabric squares. With wrong sides together I topstitched bias tape all the way around, folding under the end when I got back to where I started. At this point I had what looked like an oven mit. I folded over the top to my liking and topstitched it down. Then I found the bottom of the bias tape lines I had previously topstitched and covered the end with the “top” of my pocket. I then slanted the pocket down so it would look like the Anthro one and topstitched the two sides and bottom. I repeated this on the other side. I then continued following the pattern leaving out the tabs. I finished the top with matching bias tape before I put in my zipper . Thats it!

The pattern is soooo easy. I actually ran out of bias tape or I would have also included it in between the main skirt and the waist band like the Anthro one.

I must admit that I balked when I measured myself and found I was a size 14!!! They have got to update these pattern sizes. Of course it did motivate me even more to loose the pesky baby pounds. I hope when you head to the fabric store you have as good of luck as I did! (Of course you can always make your own luck with those 40% off coupons right?)

Make sure to come back tomorrow for the Second Skirt of Christmas. I guarantee you will like that post!!

Cheers!

Kelly

I love it! You are so creative!! 12 skirts of Christmas sounds like an awesome way to get a bunch of new skirts :)

Lovely skirt. Love the bias tape addition.

And the whole pattern measuring thing….crazy. But it made me feel better upon learning that a vintage size 14 is a size 4 nowadays. I used to wonder why there were so many size 18 and 20′s in vintage patterns at the thrift stores. Now I scoop them all up!

Great skirt. I am always looking for great skirts they are often hard to fine. I look forward to the 12 days of skirts. Thanks for sharing

I don’t know if anything this Christmas season has made me more excited than your 12 skirts idea, except maybe my husbands 12 days of Christmas presents. But I am waiting on pins and needles for all the great skirt ideas!! You are simply fabulous!
