My New Favorite Things

**Thank you so much for your response to the last post! We are positively giddy about all the prospects. I have gone back and done a post edit so there is more information from our end**

When I find something new and in my opinion awesome, I always want to share it. That is what this post is about:)Do you ever walk into a store and think “oh my goodness it is like someone reached inside my head and pulled out everything I love”? This feeling changes for me over the years as my personality changes. When I was 16 I remember the first time I went to an Abercrombie and Fitch and just about died, as did my mom when she saw the price of the “lightly distressed” jeans ha! Then my taste matured and I moved on to other stores. My love of Abercrombie morphed into my love of Pull and Bear which morphed into JCrew…Urban Outfitters…. then Anthropology and then Zara. It is ever changing depending on where I am in life. But there are certain stores that are just classic and you can count on the fact that anything you buy there will be high in quality and timeless in style. Stores like Restoration Hardware, Crate and Barrel etc. My new favorite is one I bet you haven’t heard of yet (oh yeah, I have the inside scoop…. or maybe I was just out of the loop until now ha! They have been around since 2009) it is Kaufmann Mercantile.

A few weeks ago I was in dire need of some new sewing supplies (thats what happens when you move constantly). I decided to use what I consider my “precious time” when the boys are at school to load up the squirly girls and head to Joann’s to get my much needed needles and measuring tape. Now, you need to know I  have a tolerate/ hate relationship with this store. My store here in DC is particularly horrible.  This store is the opposite of the ones I mentioned above. I walk in and feel completely out of place. It just feels like the Costco of the sewing world and i am more of a local boutique kind of girl. Plus, is it just me or have you noticed that there are no craft stores that make carts large enough to hold an infant car seat? After a horrific trip that resulted in the knocking over more the one end cap display  in my attempt to maneuver a child filled cart with one hand and a car seat with a sleeping baby in the other, two temper tantrums and me leaving empty handed, I headed home completely frustrated and determined to find a company I could “get behind”. This is where Kaufmann came into the picture. Imagine if Anthro or Urban Outfitters made sewing supplies? How awesome would that be? Well, if you are like me and want even your pins to be pretty and want to be able to hand down some of your prized sewing wares, then you needn’t look any further:

When I saw the sewing supplies on their site my jaw dropped.

When I read their “about” section I knew we were a match made in heaven: Everyday objects should be designed well and manufactured to last a long time. Materials should be chosen for functionality and durability. Most of our products are handmade, and we never sell cheaply made, mass produced versions. A well-made object can be passed down, and shouldn’t have to be replaced, so there’s one less thing in landfills. We put a lot of thought and research into everything we sell.

Reached right into my head I tell you!

I very anxiously awaited the arrival of the Sewing Notions set:

When it arrived I snatched it out of Chris’s hands and slowly opened it. I think he was wondering what in the world I was doing opening a package so gingerly and asked “What is that anyway?” Um, just heaven in a box ha!

It seriously has everything you need if you are starting from scratch.

It is pretty hard to find an awesome present for an avid sewer. Scissors? Bias Tape maker? This box set would be a perfect surprise. After seeing how high the quality was I of course had to spend the evening finding other fun items:

How cool is that wrapper!?

Washing your hair with a bar? I am intrigued. And the back is pretty fun as well:

I have always been a “get every last drop out of your toothpaste” kind of girl so this would be right up my alley:

I literally could go on and on

But you should just hop on over there and check it out yourself! Like me, you won’t be disappointed.

Cheers!

Kelly

PS Tomorrow I have some pretty huge Sewing In No Mans Land news to announce:)See you then!

I almost don’t want to know what the excited news is tomorrow only because I know it doesn’t involve me…;( lol totally kidding, but really I’m such a SINML stalker and dream of us being friends one day! Are you freaked out yet…haha, Okay, go ahead, give it to me straight! I can take it! Okay, I’ve primed the pump, now I’m ready to hear the news. BTW, I was also devastated when you proposed for an au pair, if only I could bring my family with me! I totally messed up in life early on and am barley living out my 20′s dreams. Any girl would be lucky to do it! I’m doing things backwards, so when you get there, find me a great LDS family to do a house exchange with in 4 years. One that would let us stay with them and them stay with us. I don’t want to go to Paris alone, so I’d rather do if we all were together. I have family in England so I’ve got that place covered, but would love France and Italy. I say 4 years because then all my kiddos will be old enough. I’m trying to plan it so that every summer for 4 weeks I take my kids somewhere new to learn and grow. Well I’ve rambled enough for all to see! What can I say…open book :) Thanks again for your inspiration! xoYour Future Friend (hehe)

Oh no. I didn’t need another place to spend my money. But that’s just too yummy to pass up. Pretty much anyplace with “mercantile” as its name is going to have too many things that I leave dreaming about. Thanks for the tip!

We switched to shampoo bars a while ago. Love it (ESP for travel bc it doesn’t have to go in the little quart bag). It is also a great way to wash my little man’s hair.

Thanks for this great share! Oh my gosh, it´s sooooo vintage, so adorable! Really lovely ( as are the prices!). Look what I just found, I bet you will find some sweet inspiration for your cuties here! http://www.jacadi.fr/VAD/robe/r:1:1:1:1:8130:8335.htm

My husband sells a lot of the J.R. Liggett bar soap in his barbershop…guys love them! So simple, easy & affordable without any junk. It didn’t work well for my long, thick hair though but it’s great as a body soap too :) Love Kaufmann Mercantile too.

the way you described your Joanns trip sounds exactly like how all my Joanns trips go. I have started going to the one 30 miles from my house instead of the one just a mile away because i am sooo embarrassed from all the temper tantrums and trips gone wrong! haha
